2003 - 2013
For 10 years fencers from the Aberystwyth University, Aberystwyth Town and 'old-boys' (former university students) have competed annually for the Taylor Trophy. The beautiful Taylor Trophy commemorates Munro Taylor who coached both Aberystwyth clubs for many years. An incredible day of fencing in Plascrug was followed by a spectacular gala final in the Marine Hotel. Based on medal positions the deserved winners of the Taylor Trophy were the Old Boys, followed by Town then Gown. The Gown narrowly beat the Town in the Town V Gown, the score of which were based the results of all the competitors. Triangular 2010. This will be the 8th triangular, which brings together town, university and ex-university fencers (the old boys) for a full day of fencing for the Taylor Trophy. There day will also include the town v gown competition and a fun afternoon event. All details here (943kb pdf). Triangular results are: 1st Gown (269) / 2nd Old Boys (201) / 3rd Town (198) Town V Gown: 1st Gown / 2nd Town This year the gown pulled out all the stops and managed a clean sweep of the medals. In sabre Maddox, Killion and Steph powered through the Town and Old Boys. In foil Caz, Pete and Billy crushed their opponents. In epee, Tim B, James and Katie met some resistance in the form of the Town, but ultimately took the medals. The triangular score combined with the novice scores was enough to secure the Town V Gown for the Gown. Full details here (95kb doc). In the afternoon there were two team events firstly three fencers, one fencing each weapon and a second group of three fencers consisting of two foilists and an epeeist. In foil/epee/sabre the victorious team was "We've got a vagina and are not afraid to use it!!!" (Caz, Pete & Ollie S). Individual winners were, foil - Oliver; epee - Pete; sabre - Maddox. In foil/foil/epee the victorious team was "I'm a massive ****head. No joke I love sucking ****" (Steve, Steve, Katie). Individual winners were foil 1 Steve, foil 2 James & epee Alun. Triangular. This will be the 7th annual triangular competition between us (the town), the university and uni-old-boys. So far it's two victories per team, so it's all to play for. Details can be found here (355kb pdf). All club members are eligible to fence and we'll be deciding teams in sessions running up to the event. Triangular results are: 1st Gown (253) / 2nd Town (250) / 3rd Old-Boys (237) Town V Gown: 1st Gown / 2nd Town Another very close competition this year with just three points separating the victorious Gown from the Town. The town foil (Daniel, Rob & Oliver) and epee (Daniel A, Clare & Alun) teams were triumphant and the old boy's took the sabre (Ollie S, Tim, Bex, Tuggy). However, consistent high scores across all weapons was enough to secure the Munro Trophy for the Gown. The triangular score combined with the novice scores was enough to secure the Town V Gown for the Gown. Full details here (77kb doc). In the afternoon a new team event was held with three fencers, one fencing each weapon. The victorious team was "Team I'm just a small town girl..." (Ollie S, Pete & Killion). Nevertheless full credit should go to our fearless novices William and Ferdia who fenced excellently in their first competition. |

Fencing Spectacular!
Fun Christmassy session where the Master of Arms trophy was
handed over. The winner of this year's Master of Arms is
James, followed closely by Emyr & Tall Paul. Many thanks
to all who took part of the year. Next year's devious
competition calendar will be posted early 2005! Further thanks
to those who dressed-up for the occasion - pirates, alien,
dalmatian, karate-kid, naked - you name it we've fenced it!

Triangular
& Meal. Old boys Vs Town Vs Gown fighting for
the new Munro Taylor Trophy & the Town-Gown Trophy. An
excellent day of fencing with around 70 participants in
action. The Old Boys were victorious in the Triangular
competition, but only beat the Town by 246 points to 240. In
the Town Vs Gown, we were triumphant, wrestling the trophy
from the university. Many thanks to all who attended and
especially the Old Boys who traveled so far (particularly
those who bought pistes!). Photos.

Closed Individual & Team Sabre. After a brief
brush with the boys-in-blue the butchers from Aber set off to
carve a name for themselves in Cardiff. In the individual event
Harry & Paul went out in the first round of DE, whilst
Oliver went out in the second. In an exciting team event Aber
came fourth, piped to the medals by a mere 2 points! Paul's
sabre was characterised by a unique epee-esqe style, the effect
of which varied with the opposition - his physical and
psychological presence also ruffled the odd opponent. Harry gave
a solid performance, taking hits off all fencers and his shrewd
tactics can be directly attributed to the team performance.
Oliver's 'unorthodox ' sabre technique proved successful and at
one point he managed to acquire 19 consecutive hits against an
increasingly irritated opponent.

stiffer competition as the day progressed, eventually they
finished a creditable 5th. Aber B, consisting of Rebecca, Kim
and someone poached for another team, finished 8th.

Closed Foil Championships. Both Paul and Harry fenced
well in their pools wining several fights each. Unfortunately
they promptly met each other in the DE. As could be expected an
'aggressive' battle ensued, with Paul the ultimate victor. Paul
then met David Mansour and was defeated. Kim fenced well in the
pools but due to some dubious ceding didn't progress far in the
DE

large field of competitors, finishing a well deserved mid-table.

Trip
to France. The Club is heading to Aberystwyth's
twin-town of Saint Brieuc, France to fence the Circle de L'Epee.
An excellent time was had by all with a stunning display of
hospitality from our hosts. We ate and drank superbly as well as
visiting many of the local sites. The fencing competition was
very friendly and the foil and sabre were won by St Brieuc
whilst Aberystwyth came home with the epee trophy. All
participants, from both clubs, enjoyed the challenge of fencing
new people and we look forward to a visit from Circle de L'Epee

Vs Gown Vs Old Boys & Christmas Meal. Competition
10:00 to 16:00 Penglais School, entry of £5.00. Joint Christmas
meal, black-tie (or neat) Llety Parc. A full day of fencing,
with foil, epee, sabre and novice teams battling for supremacy.
Sabre: town, old boys, gown. Epee: old boys, gown, town. Foil:
old boys, gown, town. Novices: gown, town. Congratulations to
the old boys who are the first winners of the Taylor Triangular
Trophy and the gown who now have wrestled possession of the
town-gown trophy from us! The Christmas party was superb, with
over 70 fencers eating and drinking the night away. Pictures

Taylor Trophy. Former members of the UWA fencing team would like to establish an annual competition to be held in memory of Munro Taylor, coach and mentor to UWA, Aberystwyth and Mid-Wales fencing for nearly 35 years, who died recently. This competition will be between the UWA, Aberystwyth town team and former members of those clubs for a trophy in Munro's honour. Any current or former UWA fencers who may wish to donate to the Taylor Trophy fund should contact Ceridwen Davies for details. |
